Pedal ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and website.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

Email address: When you sign up for our waitlist or create an account, we collect your email address to send you updates about Pedal.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

Location data: When you start a ride, the app accesses your device's GPS to track your cycling route. Location tracking only occurs while a ride is active and you have granted permission. Location data is stored locally on your device.
Ride data: Distance, duration, speed, and route information for each ride you take. This data is stored locally on your device.
Usage data: We may collect anonymous usage analytics such as app opens, feature usage, and crash reports to improve the app experience.

1.3 Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect your name, phone number, payment information, or any other personal identifiers beyond your email address.
We do not track your location when the app is not actively recording a ride.
We do not access your contacts, photos, or other device data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

Provide the service: To track your cycling routes, calculate savings against TfL fares, and display your environmental impact.
Communications: To send you product updates, launch announcements, and relevant information about Pedal. You can unsubscribe from these communications at any time.
Improve the app: To understand how users interact with Pedal and identify areas for improvement.

3. Data Storage and Security

Local storage: Your ride data, including routes, distances, savings, and carbon impact calculations, is stored locally on your device. We do not upload or sync this data to external servers.
Email storage: Email addresses collected through our waitlist are stored securely and used solely for communication purposes.
Security measures: We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

4. Third-Party Services

Pedal integrates with the following third-party services:

Apple MapKit: Used for route calculation and map display. Your start and destination locations are processed via Apple's MapKit framework to calculate cycling routes. Apple's privacy policy applies to data processed by their services.
TfL Journey Planner API: Used to calculate equivalent public transport fares. Journey start and end points are sent to TfL for fare calculations. TfL's privacy policy applies to data processed by their services.

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

5. Your Rights

Under applicable data protection laws (including the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), you have the following rights:

Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Rectification: You can request correction of inaccurate personal data.
Erasure: You can request deletion of your personal data. In the app, you can delete all ride data through Settings. To remove your email from our waitlist, contact us or use the unsubscribe link in any email.
Restriction: You can request restriction of processing of your personal data.
Portability: You can request transfer of your personal data in a structured, commonly used format.
Objection: You can object to processing of your personal data for direct marketing purposes.

6. Data Retention

Ride data: Stored on your device until you choose to delete it through the app's Settings, or until you uninstall the app.
Email addresses: Retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.

7. Children's Privacy

Pedal is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

8. Location Data and Permissions

Pedal requires access to your device's location services to function. You will be asked to grant location permission when you first use the ride tracking feature. You can revoke this permission at any time through your device's Settings. Without location access, the ride tracking feature will not function, but you can still view your dashboard and ride history.

We request "While Using the App" and "Always" location permissions. "Always" permission is used solely to continue tracking your ride when the app moves to the background (e.g., when your phone screen is locked during a ride). We never track your location outside of an active ride session.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy within the app and updating the "Last updated" date above. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

11. Legal Basis for Processing
